Here at the Sugar Mill we have a significant focus on the community around us. The people, entities and companies that we work with are a part of our human network. I've only be on board with the Sugar family since August and can tell you the impacts of working with people like Christy, Janie, Marcus, Monica and Richard is inspirational to one's soul.

As I've watched this wonderful group of people continuously volunteer their talents for the needs of the community, I've been searching for where I can apply mine in the same way. I'm not that great with make-up (surprise surprise) and haven't mastered photography. I share thoughts and ideas with people through channels they use.

The team here at Sugar Mill is revving up for a exciting holiday season and have started to share with you what this season means to each of us. Here is mine, with the announcement to follow...

The holiday season reminds me every year that I believe in miracles.

During the winter of 2008 my mother, Phyllis Kline, was battling an aggressive cancer with the latest and greatest medical practices. The combination of the cancer itself and the side-effects of the radiation, chemo and more brought her to a crossroads of quality of life over quantity of life left. Mom made the decision to let her body fight on its own, and enjoy her remaining time.

Mom was bedridden for what appeared indefinite shortly after Thanksgiving that year. The doctor's had run their course and on Christmas Eve as a family we decided it was time to bring in Hospice. That's when the miracle happened.

Around 7pm on Christmas Eve there was a gentle knock on my parents front door at their home in the eastern plains. Standing before me was an individual with such a warm personality and smile I couldn't help but embrace him, regardless of having just met him. His name was Jesus, and he was a care-taker for Denver Hospice.

I brought him to my mother's room and introduced him to the rest of the family. He went to work setting up and making mom comfortable. After a few moments passed he asked if we would join him in prayer, being a catholic family and all.

I don't remember any of the words he said, just the euphoric sense of a lifted heart that occurred as he spoke. An hour later we bid Jesus farewell and set for bed, given an immense amount of visitors expected for Christmas the next day.

The next morning I awoke to find my "bedridden" mom sitting up in the living room enjoying morning breakfast with the family. Her brothers were on their way and her father was by her side. She spent the entire day out of bed visiting with family and friends, and playing with her only grandchild.

Mom ascended to heaven two months later. She lived an inspirational life and is still an inspiration to many. Upon her passing we, as most families do, created a foundation in her name and made donations to Denver Hospice, Aurora Cancer Hospital and American Cancer Society. All three were fundamental parts of my mom's final years of life.

Mom would've loved Sugar Mill. For as far back as I can remember she would bring me to get my haircut at her salon while her color was setting in. She would be proud to know that I have opened my life and talents to such a wonderful group of people. So I'm going to give back to mom, in honor of so much she has done.

For the rest of 2011 and the entirety of 2012 I will be splitting my Sugar Mill income with mom. With the personal income my efforts in marketing and sales generate during the next 13 months, 50% of every dollar will go to the Phyllis Kline Foundation, and subsequently to the non-profits it supports.

Let's remember to carry the holiday message throughout the year. Whatever it does to us, the holiday season reminds us of our human core. Thank you for your support in helping me realize this dream and share it with so many. The Sugar Mill Girls performed at Hoopla for Hope on Thursday, November 10, 2011. The event was put on by eSQUARED Events for the Matthews House in Fort Collins. The Matthews House empowers young adults who lack significant family support to transition successfully to adulthood by providing the resources and support necessary for them to take control of their lives and shape positive futures for themselves. This event was sponsored by Realities for Children. The Sugar family had a great time at this event!

Don't worry folks we aren't decking the halls just yet here at the Sugar Mill. However, we understand and value the importance of the holiday season as individuals, families and friends. Before the season kicks off ahead of us we wanted to take the time to share a little from our hearts about what the holidays mean to us. What the Holidays mean to me...... Love, Happiness, Sharing and Giving. (Monica)

Love~ To have a day when our entire family is together. We Laugh, cry, hug, tell stories, and watch all the love that surrounds us. Aunts, cousins, dads, Uncles, sons, daughters, Moms, Grandmas, Grandpas, husbands and wives..... a room full of LOVE

Happiness ~ The Holidays mean peppermint mocha lattes from Starbucks, and getting up at 3 am on Black Friday and laughing about how stupid it is.... then doing it again next year.

Sharing ~ Sharing the joy and laughter with the ones we love and care about the most

Giving ~ Not only do I love to see the faces of my family light up when they open a gift they just love, watching them play and laugh. My favorite part about sharing during the Holiday and a family tradition is to help out at the homeless shelter, watching my kids share in the joy of helping those most in need. Their selfless hearts and open arms in interacting with the homeless is the best gift I can share and receive during the Holidays

Zoom in, - I'm ready for my close up....

When I was a kid, I lived in Dallas. And every year when Thanksgiving would roll around, we'd pack up the car and take a 5 hour ride to San Angelo where my Grandmother lived. She had a little house on a corner right next to a park.

My dad and I used to walk across the street to the park and toss a baseball back and forth enjoying the down time and enduring the chilly air as we just made time to hang out.

Grandmother had a huge pecan tree in her front yard and we'd all spend time out there picking up the pecans. They don't make them anymore so most of you probably haven't seen one of these, but what we used to pick them up with was a rectangular box attached to a pole. The box was open on both ends but the bottom had a few thick wires stretched across the base of it. What ya do is walk around and then kinda push down on the pecan sitting on the ground and it those wires would spread wide enough for the pecan to slip into the box and then they'd bounce back to normal, holding the pecans in. We'd get huge amounts of pecans for Grandmother's homemade pecan pie - and it was delicious!

In the evenings, we'd all just sit around in the living room, watching the seasonal shows on TV while Grandmother made dinner. And she would make a huge spread. There was hardly any room on the table for our plates. Then we'd all cram around the table and eat till it hurt and return to the living room to sit around and complain about how we all overdid it.

Now Christmas....let me tell you about that!

My mom LOVED Christmas. As soon as we got back from Thanksgiving with my Grandmother, out came the decorations, and she had a TON of Christmas decorations. She'd have stuff hanging off the doors, the mantle, stuck to the windows, little Christmas knick knacks everywhere. It was like Christmas exploded all over our house.

And from Thanksgiving to Christmas, mom would break out all of her Christmas records and play them over and over and over again, singing along and just really getting into it, building up the whole event. I can still hear my mom singing off key to those old songs and it still makes me smile when I think of it. - And now I know almost every word to those old songs. And yep, I sing along now too - but I make sure nobody can hear me cuz I can't carry a tune at all!

And I wish i could show you her Christmas tree! She made all of the ornaments herself. She'd get these white styrofoam balls and just COVER them with beads, lace, and all kinds of stuff. Different colors, sizes, and everything. We had so many lights and ornaments on that tree that it took HOURS to put it on there. - But it was all worth it. You've probably never seen a tree like my mom's.

So now I LOVE those old Christmas songs from back in the day. Whenever I hear one come on the radio now, it really takes me back to those great times during the holidays with my family.

And that's what it's all about. Family and friends. Spending time with them, enjoying each others company and even each others quirks.

Along the way of life we gain family, and sadly we lose family as well.

It's memories like these that help bring them all back.

What a fun weekend! I was ecstatic when a long time friend, Megan Hoover, told me she was going to compete in her first NPC (National Physique Committee) Bikini Competition. Megan has always been my "fitness buddy" and my inspiration to live a healthy life. Our community is very lucky to have her, and we at Sugar Mill are equally lucky to have been given the opportunity to have her in our studio. Michele is a woman with many gifts and talents. Not only is she beautiful on the outside, but a caring, loving, fun, beauty on the inside as well. She is a successful business woman, owning and operating Renaud Naturals, an all natural skin care and makeup company located in the heart of Loveland.

Celebrating a milestone birthday, she was pampered, styled and photographed. She will use these portraits for business but also to celebrate life and who she is! Her portraits are timeless and fun. Thanks for gracing us with your presence, Michele....we are truly honored to call you friend.

Dirty Girl Mud Run

When my sister (technically my cousin but really she is my sister) asked my sisters and me to do a "Muddy" 5K, I was all for it. Especially when these girls in my family said yes... it made my year! You see, a few years back my mom broke her back in a car accident while traveling to her mother-in-law's funeral and has been living in chronic pain since. Two years ago, my sister Karen's life changed drastically after her husband's aorta burst and he suffered a stroke. And of course, all of us ladies have faced life changing events, trials and tribulations over the past few years. You may say, "What does this have to do with running a 5K?" Well, as many of you know, when life suddenly throws you a curve ball, you think you will get back to "normal" but in all reality you have to adapt to a new "normal". It's easy to feel sorry for yourself and hear the voice of failure, defeat, depletion, and hopelessness. You are not alone! And sometimes what you need is a "pick-me-upper". As Rosie The Riveter says, "WE CAN DO IT!"

I am so proud of my Mom and sisters for many reasons. I have learned a lot from them. I have learned that God gives you strength when you are weak. I have learned that when you fall, you get back up. And I have learned to enjoy life, enjoy your loved ones and enjoy God's playground! On September 24, 2011 we did just that.

Dirty Girl is unlike anything you’ve ever done. This female-only, 5K mud run is designed for women of all fitness levels. The 11 military-inspired obstacles are fun and unique but with just enough hell to keep your palms a bit sweaty. And the entire event is designed to be organic and eco-friendly.

Session Highlight: Rylee Johnston's Senior Pictures Experience

High School senior pictures have got to be one of the most fun and rewarding experiences for our photographers and stylists at Sugar Mill Productions. For a senior and his/her family, it can be a time where one door closes and another opens. It is a time where there are many emotions. A time of reflection and celebration. While some investments haven't lived up to our expectations, the one investment that never changes is family. We invest in the things that will help our kids become productive adults; we invest in the things that will provide them safety, security, and comfort. We still invest in the photos that show their progress over the years, their triumphs, and their tribulations.

Rylee Johnston and her family came in for her senior shoot, SMP's RITZ Senior Session, which is our deluxe package. We were absolutely touched by this young lady's story from her accomplishments, her drive, her passion for life, her trials and tribulations and her will to carry on and succeed. It is always our goal at SMP to empower, enrich and educate but this family has done that for us.

These are the motives that implore us to share with you and tell our favorite stories about some of the families that have touched our lives. Let’s jump right in with one of our favorite family portrait sessions thus far in 2011: The Tonsing Family.

We absolutely love this family! They are full of love for one another and exude it in every shoot we’ve have done with them. This is our third year photographing them and every year we look forward to it!

As on-site photographer, Christy, explains, “Angie loves pictures and values them; she literally cannot wait to see them every year. She too has lost a parent over the last year or so and knows that you can never get those moments back! Loren, dad extraordinaire, always tells me how he never really had family photos growing up and wishes he had those moments captured. And well, Miss Paris is just fun, beautiful and full of charm and life!”

The Tonsing Family is highlighted because they are such a trio of love and inspiration to us. Their pictures really speak to us as does the love they have for one another.

Last week, photographers Marcus and Christy met the Parsons family on Pawnee Butte before the sun arrived. The Parsons were hoping to add their own unique flavor and style to the memories captured and Sugar Mill was happy to partake and facilitate. Below are some results from the early morning session. Excitement is most certainly in the autumn air here at Sugar Mill. Our grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony earlier this month were a huge success thanks to our loyal family, friends and customers. Special thanks to all involved.

With the buzz of our expanding facility comes a growth in the Sugar Family as well. We are very excited to announce the addition of three incredible young men to the Sugar Mill team, Marcus Edwards, Richard Krammes and Chris Kline.

These three “Men in Pink” are Sugar approved and will be working diligently to expand our abilities to enhance your lives with our products and services, as well as an empowering and enriching experience.

Marcus (bottom left) hails from a background of professional family, style, journalistic and commercial photography. His expertise, portfolio and talents are second to none and are an incredible addition to our photo repertoire. Marcus looks forward to adding a special mix to the Sugar experience.

Across the past thirty years Richard (bottom right) has developed and refined his professional talents in salon, fashion and wig making. His resume and credentials are vast and expansive which makes him the ideal addition to the Sugar family as a Denver-based stylist for our on-site salon services. Richards also sits as a national educator and platform artist for Aquage / Salon Quest. If his charm and wit don’t catch your attention, his talented results most certainly will.

Chris, our new marketing director (bottom center), is a native son of Colorado. As a growing professional in new media and advanced marketing, his optimism is a welcomed addition to the family. Don’t let his baby face fool you folks, he looks forward to enhancing your Sugar experience with valuable and consistent communications of our growing offers and specials in the months ahead.

2nd Annual Pacific Nights Luau

This was the place to be last night, no doubt about it. A luau at Island Lake Marina in Fort Collins (what an amazing place!), with Coyote Gold Margaritas, beer from New Belgium Brewery, food from Pappy's Corner Pub and music from Who Brought Larry?. The crowd was absolutely amazing.... some of the most fun and nicest people I have met. You all know how to have a great time!

The benefit raised money to make three children's dreams come true. Macdonald Family Charity makes it happen...

-Connor - A little boy from Loveland who dreams of swinging on a swing. Because of his medical conditions he is unable to go to the park and enjoy the play equipment. He would love to have a swing in this own backyard to ride on any time he is physically able.

-Jackson- A little boy from Fort Collins who dreams of visiting Morgan's Wonderland, a family fun park designed specifically for kids with special needs. He has Cerebral Palsy that limits how much he can enjoy other amusement parks.

-Gabriel- A little boy form Loveland who is from a family with a low income. Because Mom is also sick, the family is very limited on things they can enjoy outside of their own home. He dreams of having a regular outing like other kids his age to the Denver Zoo.

Just wrapped up our first night of Project Get Your Sexy On. Fabulous night with an amazing group of women!!! We had eight every day women come in to get their hair, makeup & photos done... we can't wait to show you the finished products! This was a promotional event to launch our Pin-Up Parties and Pin-Up Packages so everyone who registers for a Project Get Your Sexy On gets a huge discount. Went out to Times Square Dueling Piano Bar tonight and had a grand ol' time! Thursday nights are Ladies Nights with free drinks from 7-9pm. The atmosphere was inviting and the pianists and entertainment was great! Met some great people there... The birthday girl Claire and party dressed up in ridiculously great costumes. The fun table next to us, Beth, Lauren & Leah. We definitely recommend checking it out on a Thursday night (of course, after our How-To Hair & Makeup Classes at the Pourhouse Bar and Grill in Loveland that's happening every Thursday night, STARTING NEXT WEEK... How to Get Flawless Vintage Makeup. Whoohoo!)

We have come to the end of a beautiful beginning... until next year! Speak Up... Words in Fashion, Dance & Art, to benefit Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention month was a huge hit! Thank you all who came out to support a great cause and have a good time. Thanks to you, the Sava Center is able to decrease women's isolation with their 24-hour confidential hotline, support groups, sexual assault-specific therapy and advocacy programs and RAINN is able to help over 4,000 victims through their on-line hotline.

I am so honored and blessed to stand beside so many of you who want to be the change in our community and our country. I am overcome with emotion to know that we can make a difference and that with out a doubt, there is beauty that comes from ashes. For all of those who have opened up to me with your personal story (and those who have not), you are so strong and I am so proud of you. When feelings of defeat come upon you, look up. You are not alone and I can tell you that both Christy & I are also standing right beside you, along with so many others!

Finally getting around to posting some of our latest boudoir sessions. These were three amazing women. I sometimes can't believe how sexy women can be when given permission and the right environment. I think there is a desire in all women to be sexy and beautiful! Having said that, I believe and I know Janie does too, that ALL women possess beauty and given the opportunity will let their alluring, sexy side show through!

We Have A Studio!!

We found a studio space!! We have been talking for sometime now to get a place together and we have found a great space off of 4th and Lincoln in downtown Loveland. It's in a great old building with a lot of character. There is a lot of remodeling in the weeks to come and we are so excited! It is two offices adjoined together... one side will be a space to shoot and the other side will be hair and makeup. We will continue with our existing businesses (JR Design .Hair.Makeup.Wardrobe. & Photos By Christy) and now bring you Sugar Mill Productions! More to come soon!!
